Luigi is the younger brother of Mario, the popular hero of the
Super Mario Brothers series.
While his brother wears red, Luigi wears green. Luigi is also taller and skinnier than Mario.
Often overlooked, at least in comparison to Mario, Luigi was even left out of two games (
Mario
64 and
Super Mario Sunshine, though he was made playable in
Mario 64 DS) and has
been reduced to non-playable-character status in several others (such as
Paper Mario and
Super Mario RPG). In
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, one of the running gags was
that no one knew who Luigi was - not even Bowser. One of the nicknames Bowser gives him is "Mr.
Lean 'n Green," which is where this fanlisting's name comes from. Luigi did, however, get two
games of his very own,
Mario is Missing (an educational game) and
Luigi's Mansion.
One of Luigi's most impressive abilities, first seen in
Super Mario Bros. 2, is his ability
to jump very high. This ability was carried over to later ports of
Super Mario Bros. 3.
Especially in later games, like
Superstar Saga and
Luigi's Mansion, Luigi is usually
portrayed as cowardly and a little clueless. In
Superstar Saga, he seems to take on the
role of housekeeper while Mario runs off on adventures, saving the world. However, these
characteristics combined with his relative obscurity make him quite endearing.
